Each method works a bit differently, and some only become available once your channel meets certain criteria. This guide walks through what actually works today.

Why YouTube is worth the effort for a small website

YouTube is the second largest search engine after Google, and people use it to look for tutorials, product reviews, comparisons and demonstrations before they buy or sign up for anything. If your business publishes videos that answer those searches, you have a direct route to an audience that is already interested in what you do.

Unlike a blog post, a video lets people see a product in use, hear you explain a process, or watch a short demonstration. That can build trust faster than text alone, particularly for small businesses and local services where people want to know who they are dealing with. If you already run a blog alongside your site, video can work well as a companion to your written content rather than a replacement for it.

How YouTube actually sends traffic to your website

Several YouTube features can point viewers towards your website. Not all of them are available to every channel, and some have changed significantly in recent years, so it is worth knowing what currently works before you plan a strategy around it.

Video description links

This is the simplest and most reliable method, and it works on every channel with no eligibility requirements. Add your website address to the description of any long-form video. Make sure the link starts with
https://
— without this, YouTube will not turn it into a clickable link. Put the most important link near the top of the description, since YouTube truncates long descriptions and viewers have to click “more” to see the rest.

This only applies to standard, long-form videos. Links in Shorts descriptions are not clickable, which is covered below.

Channel page links (About section)

You can add up to 14 links to your channel, and the first one is the most prominent, since it displays on your channel homepage. The others appear in your About section. To add them:

Open YouTube Studio and select Basic info.

Scroll down and click Add Link.

Enter a name in the Link title field and paste your website address.

Click Publish once all your links are added.

Put your website first in the list, since that is the one most visitors will see without having to click further.

Note that this is different from how channel banners used to work. Older banners allowed up to five clickable links overlaid directly on the banner image, but YouTube has moved away from that. Links now appear below your channel description and in the About section instead, so don’t rely on guides that still describe the old banner-overlay method.

Cards

Cards are small, clickable elements that appear during a video, marked with an “i” icon. A viewer can click one at any point while watching, rather than waiting for a fixed moment. To add a card:

Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Content.

Click the video you want to edit.

Click the Cards box and choose the type of card you want.

Select the specific video, playlist, channel or link.

Set the time in the video when the card should appear.

A link card that points to an external website is only available if your channel is in the YouTube Partner Programme (YPP). This rules the feature out for brand-new or very small channels, so don’t plan your early strategy around it.

End screens

End screens appear in the final 5 to 20 seconds of a video and can feature up to four elements on a standard 16:9 video. The video needs to be at least 25 seconds long. To add one:

Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Content.

Click the title or thumbnail of the video.

Select Editor, then End screen.

Choose an element, such as a video (your most recent upload or one you pick), or a link.

It is worth knowing that end screens themselves are available to every channel with videos of 25 seconds or longer — you don’t need YPP membership just to add one. However, a link element pointing to an external website still requires YPP membership, the same as with cards. Without YPP, you can still use end screens to promote your subscribe button, a playlist or another video, which is still useful even if you can’t link out yet.

Pinned comments

Pinning a comment that contains your website link is a simple option that doesn’t require any eligibility criteria. It keeps a clickable link visible at the top of the comments section under any video. This is particularly useful for Shorts, where description links don’t work at all.

YouTube Shorts and why links behave differently

Since 31 August 2023, links in Shorts descriptions and comments have not been clickable. This is a deliberate policy change across every account, channel size and region, not a bug, and it was introduced to reduce spam. If you have been copying a link into a Short’s description expecting it to work, that’s why it isn’t.

In place of that, YouTube introduced prominent, clickable links on the channel page itself, shown near the Subscribe button. Viewers can tap your channel name from within a Short, land on your channel page, and then tap through to your website from the links section or About tab. The practical route for a small business using Shorts looks like this:

Use the Short to build interest, with a verbal or on-screen prompt such as “more detail on my channel” or “see the link on my page”.

Encourage viewers to tap your channel name or profile picture.

Once on your channel page, viewers see your links section and About tab, where your website link is listed.

Some channels with access to Advanced features can also add a clickable “Related Video” link within a Short, pointing to another public or unlisted video, Short, or live stream on the same channel. This appears below the channel handle. There is also a limited external link sticker available for declared paid partnerships, but this only applies to eligible brand deal campaigns and isn’t something most small businesses posting regular Shorts can use.

Joining the YouTube Partner Programme

Because link cards and end-screen website links both require YPP membership, it’s worth knowing the current thresholds if that’s part of your plan. There are two tiers:

Tier

Subscribers needed

Other activity

Watch-time or views path

Early access (fan funding, Shopping features)

500

3 public uploads in the last 90 days

3,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months, or 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days

Full monetisation (ads, plus card and end-screen website links)

1,000

No upload requirement

4,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months, or 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days

If you’re a new or small channel, focus first on description links, channel page links and pinned comments. These work regardless of your subscriber count and will still send meaningful traffic while you build towards YPP eligibility.

Creating videos that actually bring people to your site

Getting the technical links right only helps if people watch the video and have a reason to click through. A few practical habits make a real difference:

Answer a specific question in the title and the first 15 seconds. People searching YouTube are often looking for a quick answer, similar to a Google search.

Use a clear, descriptive thumbnail and title rather than a vague or clickbait one, so viewers know what they’re getting before they click.

Mention your website out loud in the video, not just in the description, since many viewers don’t read descriptions at all.

Keep videos focused. A short, useful video that solves one problem tends to perform better than a long, unfocused one.

Link to a specific, relevant page on your site rather than just your homepage, so the visitor lands on content that matches what they just watched.

If you run a WordPress site, you can also embed your YouTube videos directly into blog posts or product pages, which works in the other direction: it keeps visitors on your site for longer while still building views on your channel. For more on getting content strategy right across your site, see our guide on how to make your website SEO-friendly.

Measuring whether it’s working

YouTube Studio’s Analytics section shows watch time, audience retention, traffic sources and click-through rates on your end screens and cards. On your website side, check your analytics tool to see how much traffic is arriving from YouTube, and which pages those visitors land on and how long they stay.

If a particular video is bringing in visitors who leave quickly, that’s usually a sign the linked page doesn’t match what the video promised. Try linking to a different, more relevant page, or adjust the video’s call to action so expectations match what’s on the other end of the link.

FAQ

Can I add a clickable link to a YouTube Short?

Not directly in the description or comments — these have been non-clickable since August 2023. Instead, direct viewers to tap your channel name, then use the clickable links section on your channel page.

Do I need to join the YouTube Partner Programme to link to my website?

Only for link cards and end-screen links to external websites. You can still add your website to your channel’s links section and in video descriptions without joining YPP.

Why doesn’t my video description link work?

Check that the link starts with
https://
. Links without this won’t be turned into clickable text. Also confirm you’re editing a long-form video description, not a Short.

How many links can I add to my YouTube channel?

Up to 14. The first one is the most prominent and appears on your channel homepage, so put your main website link there.

Next steps

Start with the options that need no special eligibility: add your website to your video descriptions with a full
https://
link, set up your channel’s links section with your site listed first, and pin a comment with your link under your existing videos, including any Shorts. As your channel grows towards the YouTube Partner Programme thresholds, add cards and end-screen links for extra routes back to your site.
